The Uintah Arts Council is a private 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation created to aid, encourage and promote the performing arts, the visual arts and the literary arts of northeastern Utah, namely, for the city of Vernal and surrounding towns. Our main goal is to provide opportunities for local folks to enjoy the arts without travelling long distances or spending lots of money.
We support the performing arts first of all by running our "Outlaw Trail Theater" in the summer at the Outlaw Trail Amphitheater at Western Park. The show for 2007 was The Sound of Music, celebrating our 21st year of great outdoor musicals! Literally hundreds of local actors, singers, dancers and theater technicians have acquired thousands of hours of experience in this highly successful and popular venue. Broadway musicals, musicals about outlaws such as Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch, melodramas and comedies have delighted the locals and tourists for over twenty years. These community theater productions have been, for the most part, produced, directed, choreographed and performed by local, very talented people. The Outlaw Trail Theater will open again for its 22nd year in 2008 on June 17th and run Tuesday through Saturday nights (except July 4th) until Saturday, July 5th. The Outlaw Trail Theater has planned Annie for the summer of 2008.
We also produce a yearly Concert Series which bring some of the very best regional performers to our area. Celtic, dixieland jazz, big band, folk, symphonic, opera and many other styles of music have graced our stage . . . along with ballet, clogging, jazz, ballroom and folk dancing from all around the world. Shakespeare and children's theater have also entertained and instructed us, not only in full concert settings, but through educational outreach programs presented to school children for free. Many of these opportunities are underwritten by the Utah Arts Council's Performing Arts Tour through grants from the National Endowment for the Arts.
We sponsor an annual juried Art Show and a juried Photography Shootout to support the visual arts. Poetry, songwriting and play-writing contests have inspired locals in the literary arts. Through the Outlaw Trail Festival, which was originally started by the Uintah Arts Council, we also provide sponsorship to the the women only "Josie .22 Shoot".
Support for the Arts Council is provided, in part, by private donations, and corporate and government grants from The Utah Arts Council, Uintah County, Parks & Recreation, Vernal City, Tri-County Health. Major contributors are listed in other areas of this site.
